Far too sad

This is a brief blog entry.

In yesterday’s Denver Post there was the saddest article about a sweet pooch that might have to be put down due to the suffering they are experiencing from the recent Dog and Cat Food poisoning accident.

This is terrible. I can’t imagine, can’t even conceive, of how awful this must be. If you have a loved family member of the canine or feline persuasion and haven’t heard about this visit this link. Tainted pet food products are being recalled and have claimed lives already. This isn’t brand new and most of you know, but on the off chance that someone out there hasn’t heard I wanted to spread the word.

Best spot to do Yoga in Denver…

Underwater Yoga

That’s right, time to talk and poll our Denver crowd about the best spot to Yoga in the city. There is many reasons why Denver is a top singles capital and folks are so healthy, and yoga is one of them.

So where is the best spot to do some downward dog, some anusara, or a chant or two. I actually have started yoga myself, again. After spending most of my free time running and skiing without any stretching I have somehow removed most flexibility, so not only do I enjoy it I desperately need it. I have my favorite spot, although I haven’t tried more than two studios myself. What’s yours?

Living on the fringe

20070125-meehan.jpgThis was a fun Wall Street Journal article to read about the “young homesteaders” who are moving into fringe neighborhoods, making them their own, and turning them into some of the greatest spots of their city to live in.

While Denver is not the same as these other cities, and thankfully our crime is more manageable, the point of the article rings true. Riverfront Park and the Central Platte Valley were much different only a decade ago. Today they are one of the safest and most wonderful neighborhoods to live and spend time in.

Granted, the master HOA funding of off duty police officers paved the way for an almost immediate change to make the area one of the safest in Denver, but more importantly the influx of residents who made the area their home and put “eyes on the street” really have done the biggest change. And just imagine what will happen with the next 389 units in Glass House followed by all the other exciting developments.

“Why don’t you dress your cat up as a dog”

J.C.B. at My Brother's Bar

This was a true statement I overheard during a recent lunch at My Brother’s Bar down in the CPV. I had just finished a physical; which is according to every dudes’ magazine and medical professional is exactly what I should do at my age, and was starving. My morning had been crazy without a second to breathe or eat and the fact that they stole some of my blood left me feeling even more ravenous. So my body was telling me it needed something with a touch of flavor (aka grease) and My Brother’s Bar was just the ticket.

So I belly up to the bar and order myself a J.C.B. If you don’t know what a J.C.B you had better get in there because I am not telling. Don’t take this as me being mean, I just think it is a rite of passage that you go in and order this delicious item along with a brew just like I did when I moved here. [Read more →]

A great tip for your pup!

Mobile Grooming

I am not sure if this counts as an Urban Toy category, but it sure is an Urban time saver.

My pup is an Alaskan Malamute of about 125 lbs and he sheds a TON! And when I say a ton, I am not kidding. We have had tumbleweeds of white undercoat floating across our concrete floors daily for months because I have been postponing getting him groomed. I can make all the excuses in the world. The first is that I don’t want to drive, which is certainly true. All the places I used to take him to get all cleaned up are miles away. Of course I can add on the holidays, moving, and a billion other excuses as well.

But I don’t need excuses any longer. I finally found the perfect urban solution for both Bear (my pup) and myself. The solution is Aussie Pet Mobile, which is a friendly groomer who comes to me instead of me going to them. Here’s how it works… They show up at a scheduled time and I take Bear down to meet them. They have all the tools inside the van including a tub, a super fuzz grabbing vacumn, and every brush under the sun. For about two hours I sat at Ink and had a nice cup of coffee, caught up with clients, and read through my list of emails. They they called to tell me they were done and I walked a whole 100 feet to get him. Now he looks great, ready to go pick up a lady dog in the park, and the tumbleweeds are gone (at least for a little bit).

It’s cool!

Blizzard hits Denver! Wahoo!!

Happy snow dogOkay, so I love the snow and the beautiful storm that is blanketing Denver is beautiful. I am not happy that my travel plans are in the garbage, and even more unhappy that the airlines don’t have a solution, or seem to be concerned that the next flight I might catch is literally on Christmas Day.

But sometimes you just have to take life as it is, laugh and enjoy. And so I took my pup for a hike across Commons Park and joined the other true snow lovers with their dogs, their skis, their sleds, and even their snowboards. Schuss on fell Denverites, for my lady and I are off for a dinner at one of the few restaurants still open. We will travel by foot and enjoy a warm cozy dining experience as the snow falls outside. If you couldn’t find anything open during the storm.. here is a hint.. try the hotel restaurants. Here are some funky snow pics!

Give your car a vacation - Messenger Bags

brown.jpg

With my recent move downtown, I decided to give my car a vacation and focus on getting everywhere by bike. Lets face it, its healthier, more fun, and gas is getting too dang expensive. Plus I am loving and embracing my new urban lifestlye. So this post is about finding the best Messenger Bags out there.

I started with a search across the messenger blogs. There are some great blogs out there for the messenger community. New York has some great ones that give you great insight into a messenger’s life. Including some moving memorials for those who have been injured. I recommend you check it out along with many others.

After an extensive search the bag that surfaced as the top dog was the PAC Designs Ultimate bag. This thing is awesome, holds a busload of stuff, and is comfortable as heck. I have tested it on a trip to france the first month, then some routine grocery and shopping trips around town. It hasn’t let me down.

The trouble everyone talks about in their blog is the time it takes to get a bag, since they are backlogged quite a bit. I had no problem at all, but I did cheat. When I called in they had just finished a brown batch. Luckily, this was the color I wanted anyway but if you really need a bag, ask what has recently been completed or what is available. If you are too picky, or want a ton of customization, you could be looking at MONTHS. So, cope, pedal, and enjoy.

Ultimately, my goal is to keep my car for emergencies, ski trips (those are NECESSARY) or times when I need to shuttle someone else (like my lovely lady).

Other times, if I can hoof it or bike it this messenger bag is getting a workout.

Hope you love it, and would love to get some comments on other folks experience with their messenger bags. Help other Urban Brainers gear up wisely!

Happy Trails
