Mmmm… Best Cheesesteak in Denver

Denver Ted's Cheesesteak

So I was planning to start writing about all the things keeping me busy.  I was going to write about things to do in Denver, writing workshops, photography classes, improv and even the best boot camp in Denver for getting in shape for the rapidly approaching warm weather of Denver’s Summer.

Instead I’m writing about Cheesesteak.

For the past few months I’ve been a camper at Genesis Fitness and taking their Power Boot Camp.  I cannot say enough about how great of an experience this camp is.  I’ve nearly puked a few times (once due to my festivities the night before but mostly just pure “oh my god can I please stop now” ass kicking by some truly great instructors) but I have to say I am totally and absolutely hooked.  For the few who do follow the instructors advice and wear a heart rate monitor the calories we burn are through the roof.  This, in my humble opinion, means that I don’t have to feel guilty about indulging every once in awhile.  So I’ll write more about my favorite boot camp later, this is about what to do with those well earned calories.

Everyone has an indulgence, a guilty craving, a desire.  TIME OUT.. there are too many senator or what’s happening with the church bad jokes so keep your mind on Food and Drink please.  I am talking Martinis at JAX, Steak with french fries at LoHi Steak Bar, Fried chicken at Tom’s Home Cooking, Chips and Queso at Lola, JCB’s at My Brother’s Bar, Wine and Cheese at Z Cote, Crème brûlée at D Bar or… Cheesesteak at Denver Ted’s Cheesesteak.

I had never heard of Denver Ted’s.  Then in boot camp one of my fellow campers mentioned it and raved about how incredible it was, albeit not healthy.  Well (thought I) isn’t that part of the benefit of working out regularly.  Calories out means… calories in.  At least on occasion.

I went this past Saturday to check it out.  It’s a simple hole in the wall storefront which I have to say is the utmost compliment.  The absolute best food I have ever had are at places that are simple and just focus on doing whatever food they do really well.  You can order your Cheesesteak in a regular 9″ size or go for the 12″.  The cheese options are American, Provolone, or .. get this… CHEEZ WHIZ.  Add in whatever you want from mushrooms, green peppers, mayo, oil and vinegar, or jalapenos.  The standard is American with Onions.  I threw in some jalapenos just because I love a little spice and I stuck with the American although the Cheez Whiz was certainly tempting.

It was.. simply put, incredible.  The bread for the buns was soft and fresh.  The steak and cheese were loaded inside and heaping out.  None of the chain fast food standards where the bread is 90% of the sandwich with two slivers of meat wedged in a stale hardened bun.  This was a piece of art.  The fries are also worth mentioned.  Cooked fresh when you order them and tossed in salt so you never are eating old dry fries that have been sitting under the lamp (they don’t seem to have a lamp.. a good thing).  I got the regular and felt like rolling out the door in contentment so I can’t even imagine what the large would do to the rest of my day.. a food coma for sure.

So I now have a new favorite splurge with my hard earned work out calories.  Now the question I have for those of you who put in the sweat and aches in the gym, on the trail, or wherever your sport of choice puts you.  With the hard earned calories that you get to indulge what would be your guilty pleasure?

You worked out all week and get to indulge.. What is your guilty pleasure?
