When Dessert is a meal all to itself… D Bar Desserts

I love this. Someone has done what needed to be done and made Dessert a meal and a destination all for itself.

Dessert never gets its due. You have your appetizers, salads and entrees only to look at a dessert menu as an afterthought. Why not make the dessert portion of the meal it’s own unique experience. We were thinking this the other night as we commented “oh no dessert for us… we are fine”. We were fine but what we were secretly thinking is that after dinner we were going to head across town and begin the second seating of our evening with a singular focus on Dessert.

D Bar Desserts is a wonderful culinary and decadent treat located at 1475 East 17th Avenue Denver, CO 80218-1656. The have a warm and cozy spot with high table and bar seating, a few low tables, and a never ending flow of sweet dessert treats flowing out from the kitchen. My favorite spot is to sit at the bar by the dessert chef to watch the scorching of the Crème brûlée (crème brulée in L’Orthographie 1990) (French for “burnt cream”; pronounced /ˌkrɛm bruːˈleɪ/ in English, [kʁɛm bʁyle] in French), the layering of the ice cream sandwich, or the saute of the sweet gooey glazes. They have a license for wine and beer so you can certainly enjoy something potent with your dessert but we enjoyed their delicious coffee paired with our taste treats.

On our first visit we tried the Crème brûlée and the Molten Cake Thingy Everyone Has (yes, that’s the menu name) and we slipped into bliss. Granted, we almost had to be rolled out but with so many treats to try it was too tempting not to at least sample a couple. FYI, the Crème brûlée is just amazing, and I’ve sampled more Crème brûlée than any cardiologist would care to know. Paired with the Molten we had a balance of Chocolate. Let’s face it… you have to include some chocolate.

It only took a week for us to require a repeat visit. This was the event I mentioned above where we were discussing during dinner our planned departure for the D Bar Dessert. It was that good. On our return trip we tried the Milk and Cookies and the Ice Cream Sandwich. Both were wonderful but I have to admit the contrast and combination from our first night remained the favorite. But in the cookie mix the gooey, melty warm chocolate chip cookies did bring instant smiles.

Next trip will be something new again.. perhaps the doughnuts or the cake and shake (the cake and shake is a favorite of a friend.. apparently there are different chocolate layers and flavors.. mmmmm).

Monday through Thursday you can pop in until 10 PM but on Friday and Saturday they stay open till Midnight to meet the needs of weekend date night or dinner event out. Don’t be surprised if you have a little bit of a wait, but it’s worth it. Just make sure to plan to burn a few calories to make up for it (and for those who are on date night I welcome you to read into that anything you want).

Cheers all and enjoy your Denver night out. This city is getting better and better every day.
