Need a solution for mountain traffic

Reading the New York Times this week I was not surprised to see mention of our horrible traffic issue on I-70 between here and the mountains. What amazes me is that the train solution isn’t being pushed harder. Short term fixes work, well, short term. A long term solution is needed.

That’s on my wish list anyway.

I think we ought to close the road to 18-wheelers at high traffic times.

Frequently, improving traffic congestion in one place, I-70 for example, creates a bottleneck further down the line, such as longer waits for ski lifts because many more people will ski due to the lack of congestion on I-70. Aside from that predictable outcome, one would think that the ski areas have so much to gain by enabling more customers to reach their businesses that they would help to fund a solution.

An I-70 or a train solution will be incredibly expensive to taxpayers. The lack of a solution will continue to be equally expensive to ski areas that lose business and their customers who sit in traffic.

The resorts (at least in Eagle County) have no interest in helping people get to their mtns. The reason is Vail and BC can easily atain the maximum number of guest allowed by the US Forest Service now…..and neither has the capacity to park all of these people as it is. I averaged 50+ days per year when I liver there (99-07), but have not been once this winter…..I don’t know how the rest of you Denverites endure that traffic every weekend.

I live in Eagle County and I have to say that I love going on the mountain when the pass is closed because the crowds are significantly less. That’s not to say that I don’t think we need to get the ball rolling and start constructing a light rail between Denver and here. I’m usually going the opposite direction of all the traffic an I still think we need the rail. The rail would save time and keep drivers off sketchy road conditions.
