Avalanche seats and real estate

One of the most wonderful treats that happen when you live downtown is what I call the magic ticket. The magic ticket is that last minute invitation to go to some event downtown. It might be the Avs, the Nuggets, the Broncos (less common) or any number of other events. But somehow, some way, you have that magic free ticket to go. Why does this happen?
Well, for one thing people are just plain old fashioned nice. I know I will get some disagreement on that one so all you nay sayers can just look in a mirror. You get what you give folks, keep that in mind. The other reasons could be… schedules change, meetings pop up, other events are more inviting, snow falls, roads get icy, temperature drops, kids puke, work deadlines loom, people party too much the night before, or someone just changes their darn mind about what they are in the mood for that night.
Thats where the urbanite comes in. No one wants to waste a ticket so they find a home for them, and when you live downtown steps from the arena odds are good it is you. You can change your schedule and mobilize on a dime.
The origination of the ticket could be a colleague at work, a friend, or a client. Sometimes its a friend of a friend of a friend you have never met. Either way, usually just minutes before game time the tickets will appear. That is why they are magic. What is even better is that magic tickets usually travel in groups, as was the case with the game I got to go to last night. Friends like to share (thankfully).
The point I am getting at is that I am always amazed at how many times those who select to live downtown get magic tickets. Some people I know have never bought season tickets but attend events more than the regular season owners (okay, that might be a bit of an stretch, but it is close).
So is my point that you shouldn’t buy season tickets? Actually, no. We were talking last night, while trying not to feel the pain of what was happening on the ice (we lost by more than one), of the future of seats downtown.
We came up with an interesting theory. Have you ever heard someone talk about how they “should have” done something. We all have. They should have bought that condo at the base of Vail in the 80’s. Or maybe they talk about how they should have bought downtown ten years ago, or in the CPV yesterday. Well guess what. What you should do you still can do. Because our downtown, Union Station, and CPV is still growing, evolving, and changing. What is the saying, we have just begun. Believe it.
What is coming? More of the coolest urban living in the country, more of the best restaurants, more of the best shopping, and more density overall in a growing fun and exciting city. Now let’s bring this full circle with our sporting events.
I love to go to Avs games. I love to go to Nuggets games. I love to go to Broncos games. So do most of the folks I know. And we just love the fact that we can avoid traffic, avoid the headaches, and walk to the games. More importantly we can walk home. From a supply and demand standpoint, we are on big part of the demand for tickets and the events of downtown are a part of our lifestyle.
Now imagine how this “urbanite” group is going to change over the next 10 years. When I say change I mean grow. Every year there are more, and more, and more folks living, laughing, and loving the downtown life. More people = more attending games = more demand. Demand is going up, supply is staying the same. Go get your econ books if you don’t know how this pans out. Just from this standpoint tickets might just be a darn good investment today. Think of those seats as little pieces of real estate in a growing market.
Now just imagine if we have a rocking year in terms of performance. Icing on the cake if that happens. Ouch, those tickets become really hard to get and the price goes up. So if you are a fan and want to be in the drivers seat. Buy those tickets soon for the future.
So don’t say I didn’t warn you. And please don’t say in a few years “I shoulda got my season tickets back when…” because hindsight is always 20/20.
Go Avs!
