More snow

Yep, still snowing and getting BITTER cold.

Farmers’ Almanac weather forecasts for the month of February predict snow will coat much of the country before the sun shows its face again. According to Farmers’ Almanac, residents of the upper Great Plains and Northern Rockies can expect a powerful winter storm to pound the region in early February. In New England and the Mid-Atlantic, heavy snow is expected during the second week of month, with lesser amounts of accumulation building up through early March. Other regions, including the Great Lakes and many southern states, will get off easier, with light flurries falling through most of February. Regardless of the region, one thing is certain; winter isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

An Interview with McLoughlins

McLoughlins

Living in Riverfront Park means you certainly know one pub by heart. And just like that old Cheers show with norm and cliff, the beauty of this gem is that everyone really does know your name. Of course sometimes that is because you had a little bit too much fun the night before and your antics are well remembered. This, of course, is not a story about me and my friends… It is everybody else.
McLoughlin’s is like a den mother that is always there to make sure you are well fed, warm, and never thirsty. When we are working 80 hour weeks they have been kind enough to bring over our lunch and make sure we don’t forget to eat. When we come home late at night and want to regroup with friends for a nightcap they are open until their 2 am closing, no matter how slow their evening is. When you need a great meal and a friendly face they are always there. The people are great, the food is great, and the beer is cold.

And I haven’t even told you how great the summers are sitting out on the patio. That was the best.

During the blizzard when everything was shut down they kept us fed until the last scrap of food was gone. How’s that for reliability.

So join me in getting to know a little bit more about McLoughlins and Jon Koenig General Manager/Owner. [Read more →]

Living on the fringe

20070125-meehan.jpgThis was a fun Wall Street Journal article to read about the “young homesteaders” who are moving into fringe neighborhoods, making them their own, and turning them into some of the greatest spots of their city to live in.

While Denver is not the same as these other cities, and thankfully our crime is more manageable, the point of the article rings true. Riverfront Park and the Central Platte Valley were much different only a decade ago. Today they are one of the safest and most wonderful neighborhoods to live and spend time in.

Granted, the master HOA funding of off duty police officers paved the way for an almost immediate change to make the area one of the safest in Denver, but more importantly the influx of residents who made the area their home and put “eyes on the street” really have done the biggest change. And just imagine what will happen with the next 389 units in Glass House followed by all the other exciting developments.

New Bar-B-Q on Tennyson

BarBQadd

Rumor has it that a new Bar-B-Q spot opened up on Tennyson that is supposed to be true St. Louis style good. I haven’t been and just heard about it. But it’s on the radar for a future review soon. Here is a description to tide you over…

There is no quick chat about barbecue with “pit boss” Hoss Orwat. The barbecue connoisseur and historian can ramble for hours on the intricacies of slow-cooked Southern cuisine, which is good since everything that comes out of his new Big Hoss Grill in Denver’s Historic Tennyson Street takes more than half a day to prepare. Orwat’s menu rambles, too, from traditional Texas brisket and pit-cooked ribs to interesting twists like the Bear Bryant, a pork and brisket sammie with a sweet white Alabama…

Jeff Foxworthy takes his hits on Colorado

638639_356x237.jpg

A friend passed this on suggesting it was Urban Brain Worthy. I agree.

At least we can laugh at ourselves.

Jeff Foxworthy on Colorado

( It was only a matter of time before Jeff Foxworthy took a couple of shots
at Colorado)

You are a Coloradoan if …………..

1. You switch from “Heat” to “A/C” in one day.

2. You know what the “Peoples Republic of Boulder” means.

3. Your sense of direction is: towards the mountains and away from the
mountains.

4. You’re a meat-eating vegetarian.

5. The bike on your car is worth more than your car and you have your own
special bike lane.

More Snow!!

snow2007-01-26_20-22-50.JPG

Yep, the snow beacon theory hits again. First the storm wasn’t supposed to hit until this afternoon and it hit at 5:00 am.

The initial report was 1 to 3 inches, now its 3 to 5, but I don’t see it stopping.

I love snow!

What is your Senator doing today?

Jon Tester site

A new trend has started in Washington and I like it. Although technically it might have started in Montana.

During the elections in 2006, Jon Tester (D) ran with one unusual and new election promise in his campaign. If elected he would blog his schedule daily of the meetings he attended, the people he met with, and even his travel schedule between Montana and Washington. His goal was transparency and I think he got it. [Read more →]

“Why don’t you dress your cat up as a dog”

J.C.B. at My Brother's Bar

This was a true statement I overheard during a recent lunch at My Brother’s Bar down in the CPV. I had just finished a physical; which is according to every dudes’ magazine and medical professional is exactly what I should do at my age, and was starving. My morning had been crazy without a second to breathe or eat and the fact that they stole some of my blood left me feeling even more ravenous. So my body was telling me it needed something with a touch of flavor (aka grease) and My Brother’s Bar was just the ticket.

So I belly up to the bar and order myself a J.C.B. If you don’t know what a J.C.B you had better get in there because I am not telling. Don’t take this as me being mean, I just think it is a rite of passage that you go in and order this delicious item along with a brew just like I did when I moved here. [Read more →]

More on Green Roofs

Green Roofs

Every week or so I have to make a pitch for something green. Today it is Green Roof Architecture. There is so much more that can be done with the rooftops of our buildings. And along with the environmental benefits there are also the aesthetic and human enjoyment factors. Green roofs can be beautiful private gardens for residents, and there are also stories of folks creating private gardens for their residents, shared vegetable plots, or simply a quiet space to relax.

I found a great site that has a wonderful entry worth checking out at http://www.inhabitat.com/2005/11/13/green-roofs/ . Take a moment to learn more and hopefully we can see this grow in Denver (even with our arid conditions).

Happy Green!
